Quality Improvement Programme
The Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) was launched by the Government of India in 1970. Since its inception, the programme has been endeavouring to improve the quality of technical education in the country. The main objective of the programme is to upgrade the expertise and capabilities of teachers of the AICTE approved degree-level engineering institutions, National Institutes of Technology (NITs) of the country.
The programme is now being implemented and monitored by the National QIP Coordination Committee (NQCC), funded by AICTE (A Statutory Body of the Government of India).
Through its Curriculum Development Cell, this programme has also been involved in making efforts to upgrade the teaching curricula and enhance the knowledge of teachers of various engineering colleges/ institutions.
There are nine major QIP centres (IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, and IIT (BHU) Varanasi) in the country. In addition, there are 74 minor centres.
Major activities under the QIP programme:
1. Degree Programmes (Ph.D.)
Under this scheme, faculty members of AICTE approved institutions are given the opportunity to upgrade their qualifications. Certain selected institutions offer Ph.D. Programmes to the faculty members and they are paid scholarships and contingency grants by the Council.
2. Short Term Courses
A number of short term courses are organized under QIP for the benefit of the faculty members from different institutions in the emerging areas of Engineering Technology / Pharmacy / Management etc. at regular intervals around the year.
3. Curriculum Development Cell Activities
The curriculum development cells were set up to organise seminars, workshops and inter- institutional programmes related to the development of methodologies for formal and informal training.

One centre, designated as Principal Coordinator in rotation among the nine major centres (IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, and IIT (BHU) Varanasi) administer the Ph.D. admission process under QIP. QIP short term courses are conducted in both ways i.e. in IITD campus as well as online. Currently due to CoVID-19 only online short term courses are being conducted/offered.
The QIP short term course duration varies from 3 days to few weeks depending upon the programme content and structure.
Most of the sessions are taken/delivered by the IITD faculty members, however depending upon the programme nature, on a case to case basis eminent faculty members/subject matter experts from the reputed institutes/organizations around the globe may be invited to deliver the sessions.
Only the regular faculty members from AICTE approved institutes can attend the QIP short term courses.
